Here at the Association of Social Entrepreneurs in Vihiga, we believe in thinking globally while acting locally. That’s why we’re incredibly proud and energized to share that our very own CEO, Mr. Evans Muswahili Ladema, represented not just our Association, but the vital perspectives of Kenyan communities and social entrepreneurs, at the prestigious 2025 Forum on Scenarios for Climate and Societal Futures held at the University of Leeds, UK, from July 16th to 18th.
This wasn’t just another conference. The Scenarios Forum, coordinated by the International Committee on New Integrated Climate Change Assessment Scenarios and hosted by the University of Leeds’s Priestley Centre for Climate Futures, is a premier global gathering. It brought together the world’s leading minds dedicated to one crucial task: developing and applying scenarios to navigate our planet’s complex environmental and societal challenges. Building on the successes of previous forums in Denver and Austria, this year’s event was uniquely timely, focusing on an era defined by rapid environmental shifts, social upheaval, and global uncertainty.
Why Does This Matter for Vihiga’s Social Entrepreneurs?
The Forum delved deep into the practical power of climate and socioeconomic scenarios – essentially, stories about possible futures – to tackle interconnected global crises. Key themes resonated powerfully with our mission:
- Bridging Disciplines: Experts from diverse fields shared knowledge, fostering collaborations essential for holistic solutions – mirroring our own cross-sectoral approach in Vihiga.
- Informing Action: Discussions centered on how scenarios must effectively inform real-world policy, investment (like building portfolio resilience!), and assessments crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – goals directly relevant to our community work.
- Tackling Complexity: The Forum emphasized using scenarios to address urgent challenges like rapid environmental change and social disruption – challenges our members confront daily in the Lake Region.
- Centering Equity: Crucially, equity and social justice were cross-cutting themes, ensuring future planning considers fairness – a core principle of social entrepreneurship.
- Practical Applications: From health impacts to sustainable investment, the Forum explored tangible uses for scenarios, highlighting tools that could empower our members to future-proof their community initiatives.
- Leading by Example: Even the Forum’s catering focused on sustainability, demonstrating the commitment to practical climate action we champion locally.
A Seat at the Global Table
It was essential for the Forum to include diverse voices – perspectives from different disciplines, countries, and cultures. We are profoundly grateful to the Climate Works Foundation for their generous travel support, which made Evans’s participation possible. His presence ensured that Vihiga’s perspective, the realities of undeserved communities in Kenya, and the innovative spirit of African social entrepreneurship were represented on this global stage. His engagement focused on how these critical scenario tools can be translated into actionable strategies for community resilience and sustainable development right here in our counties.
Looking Forward with Clarity
Participating in the Scenarios Forum 2025 was more than an honor; it was an invaluable investment in our future. The insights gained, connections forged, and emphasis on equitable, practical solutions directly inform our work. They empower us to better anticipate challenges, design more resilient social enterprises, and advocate effectively for policies that support sustainable development in Vihiga and beyond, all while contributing to the global fight against climate change.
We celebrate this significant step in our journey and extend our deepest appreciation once again to the Climate Works Foundation https://www.climateworks.org/ for believing in the importance of our voice at this critical global conversation. The future is complex, but through collaboration, innovation, and the power of foresight, we are better equipped to shape it for the benefit of our communities. Stay tuned as we translate these global insights into local action!

We are witnessing an amazing moment in our lives as members of the conservative Kenyan society become more open to the idea of global minds and village hearts. This concept encourages us to focus not on external agendas, but on solving our local problems, with climate change being one of the most significant challenges we face. I commend Vihiga, the Climate Works Foundation, Leeds University, and the entire faculty for bringing this initiative to life. When others say something is not possible, that shouldn’t deter those who are actively working to make it happen. Congratulations!
Any iniative targeting to bring sustainable development to our communities is on point.
